These are tender-hearted times.  After leading our retreat for Women Lawyers who wanted to breakthrough their money blocks, attending a friend’s daughter’s bat mitzvah, spending time with friends along the way, going to a retreat with my coach, PLUS some personal challenges and all that’s happening in the world, I crashed.

I’m feeling tender-hearted and in the spirit of giving this month, I want to offer you three books I turn to when feeling low, slow, and not sure what to do with myself. There are many books that I hold dear, and these three are on the newer side of my bedside table.

I heard a coach I follow, Stacey Boehman, say recently on a podcast (and I paraphrase)… “Coaching isn’t all rah-rah and accountability.  It’s being present with people.  Allowing whatever is present for them to arise, and being with it.”

In writing this, I also realized that friends sent me each of these books while I’ve been going through challenging times.

If it feels good to you, imagine I’m a friend sending you these books. May they be new on your nightstand and nourish your heart too.  A snap from each book is below.

The Comfort Book by Matt Haig.  Matt Haig also wrote The Midnight Library, one of my favorite fiction books.  The Comfort Book collects little snippets from his life, and journey out of depression.  The cover is pale blue and a little squishy.  The book feels like I’m wrapped under a cozy blanket with a warm mug of something yummy in my hands.  May it give you some comfort too.

Keep Moving by Maggies Smith – Smith, a poet with a big following on Instagram and Substack (more on favorite Substacks in a future email this month) is a bit more of a “dust yourself off and as the title says, ‘keep moving.'”  She weaves in her losses with prose, and a little motivation.

Rest is Resistance: A Manifesto by Tricia Hersey – Founder of the Nap Ministry exposes Grind Culture and our focus on “productivity.”  For every sleep-deprived woman, especially people of color, who carry the expectations that you always have to be working no matter what, have shame about “not being able to get it all done” and are driven by the belief that you have to “bill and do more” please before you order this book… go lay down and take a nap.

What have you been reading and loving? I welcome your recommendations!

From top to bottom – all three books.
