In the past year or so, you may have noticed a rise in the media platform, Substack. Substack, in my own words, is a place for writers to publish their work, often long-form, and readers to find and support the writers they like with subscriptions, typically $5/month.
When I Google, “What is Substack” this is how they describe themselves:
Substack’s simple system lets you publish to the web, email, and our app simultaneously so you can find new readers and always reach your existing audience.
Last year, I encouraged a WILL Member who is continuing her journey in the WILL mastermind The Creators Circle, where we are going through The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron, to begin a Substack.
She took me up on it and it’s a point of pride that she preceded Elizabeth Gilbert and Joanna Goddard (Cup of Jo blog fame) onto the ‘Stack. (I don’t think I’m entirely making up this nickname, but I may be the only one who calls it that.) Check it out here: The Cowgirl, The Shark and Stilettos and Sharks by Hillary Sobel.
So if you haven’t explored Substack yet, do so online or they have a great app. I do believe there has been a substantial X (the platform formerly known as Twitter) migration over to Substack.
While there’s a wide variety of content, I am mostly interested in personal development, women going through a divorce, mid-life transitions, and my beloved Elizabeth Gilbert (who encompasses all three categories!)
Here are a few of my favorites…
- Letter from Love with Elizabeth Gilbert, author, speaker, traveler, and guide.
- HONEY STAY SUPER, by Kimberly Harrington, creating a new life after 50
- For Dear Life, by Maggie Smith, Poet, editor, writer, and teacher.
If you, like many of the women I work with, are a lawyer with creative aspirations, Substack may be a place you want to begin to publish.
If you are a reader, enjoy! But beware of the many rabbit holes you may fall into and the $5/month subscriptions can add up.
Most people offer a “free” version with more content opened up when you pay.
Hope you enjoy dipping into some of the resources.
