There is nothing wrong with you - Women interested in leaving law

The level of shame, self doubt, and feeling of being stuck that I hear from current and prospective WILL members is pretty significant.

It’s as if (big) law says: you should be so grateful to work in a prestigious place with such smart people and forever be in service to the endlessly hungry maw of the billable hour.

Um, really?

Wouldn’t it be okay if someone didn’t want that?

You don’t have to want that either.  Don’t let anyone tell you that there’s something wrong with you if that’s not what you want.

Let me repeat that: there is nothing wrong with you.

No thing.

Not one.

You are delightful exactly as you are, with all your quirks, interests and a beating desire to do something more meaningful in the world.

You don’t just want to be a lawyer.

You want to do work that has purpose, impact and helps people.

You did not go to law school to service the hierarchy at your firm with yucky power dynamics and undertones.

Would you judge a woman who wanted to have a bigger impact on the world, do something meaningful, and uplift others?

If the answer is no, then it’s time to release ALL the judgement that you put on yourself.

{Trust me, I know this isn’t easy.  I’m working on it too.}

Toss that boulder off your chest, and repeat after me: “There is no-thing wrong with me.”

I’m saying it right along with you.

Love,
Elena
