I was taking a walk the other morning and musing about a big decision.
To be honest, I was giving myself a hard time. I’ve got Gemini all over my chart, and I tend to hang out in ambivalence longer than is probably good for me, and those around me.
Then, I remembered this quote from my favorite TV show of 2020, Ted Lasso.
“Be curious, not judgemental.” – Walt Whitman
This program is my self-soothing pandemic distraction of choice. I must confess, I’ve watched it three times… okay, four.
If you haven’t seen it yet, I believe it’s worth the subscription to Apple+. My favorite episode (no spoilers) is one in which Ted engages in a wager and game of darts. During that scene, he shares this Walt Whitman quote, “Be curious, not judgemental.”
Now, you might be wondering what this has to do with switching your career.
Generally, lawyers are trained to be judgemental. Wouldn’t you agree?
This isn’t reserved for opposing counsel. If you’re anything like most WILL members, you judge yourself rather harshly. The inner critic is often running the show.
In WILL, we work on softening and managing those inner judges and critics. You experience curiosity and relief. You expand your mindset so that you see new ways to change things that once seemed fixed. You control the steering wheel, and your inner critic rides in the back.
So let me ask you, where have you been judging yourself most harshly?
Then ask, “Can I be more curious? How can I be less judgemental?”
Do you feel yourself soften? Even just holding those questions helps me breathe a little more deeply. It smooths out the edge of self-criticism, and dulls the blade of how I believe I “should be.”
What could being more curious and less judgmental do for you?
Just as the earth is softening now as the daffodils rise up, what could softening yield for you?
I’d love to hear. Hit reply and let me know. (And, if you’re already a Ted Lasso fan, tell me who is your favorite character and what you love about the show.)
Blooming gently,
Elena
