On January 3rd, the Sunday NY Times included a special supplement “Notes from the Newsroom: Overnight Emails Tell the Story of 2020”.
It is a remarkable snapshot of the year, told through emails sent by the overnight editors to tee up for the team for the day ahead.
Each of them begins with “Good morning, all:…”
The decency that the editors had. The respect and care shown by writing, “Good morning, all” before jumping into the most pressing news of the world, moved me to tears.
This week we saw a return to decency in the White House.
Crying with joy, jumping up and down, cheering, fist bumping and sobbing with uncontrollable relief as I watched – standing a foot away from the TV.
And the women! And their fashion! Because every detail conveyed a message.
Then Amanda Gorman, with her yellow coat, high braids and red crown – her voice echoed in my ears, as she bowed her head and quietly left the podium.
I’m here for decency. How about you?
Women who come to WILL often talk about the “toxic” environments in which they work.
Yelling, beratement, public criticism for making a typo or not “making hours” are just a few examples.
Decency is just the beginning. The basement. I want so much more for myself and you.
I want…
Michelle Obama’s broad shoulders, badass pantsuit and Farrah Fawcett hair flip.
Kamala’s poise and containment, the energy surging behind her sparkly eyes and swelling heart.
Lady Gaga’s attention to every detail and golden dove flying broadly across her chest.
J Lo’s monochromatic swagger, style, dripping in jewels and hitting the mark, unapologetically sharing her gifts and talents.
Amanda Gorman’s poise, poetry and quiet ambition.
Dr. Biden’s sparkle, claiming her place as an educator, matriarch, prankster and parent.
I want all of this and so much more for all of us.
I want us to shine, speak and sing as these women did.
I want you to work in a place where at the very minimum, you are treated with decency.
Where you are greeted in an email, no matter how urgent, that begins with “Good morning”.
With much love and an open, hopeful heart …
