While enjoying the latest O magazine, I read this in the 20 questions with Michelle Obama. “When in your life have you needed courage?”
Her answer stopped me cold.
“Giving up a law career I didn’t want and following my own path – it hasn’t always been easy, but at least it’s always been mine.”
Can you believe the thing she remembers most as requiring courage, is leaving her law career?
It both blew me away and did not surprise me.
Leaving (big) law is NOT easy.
I believe in some ways (if you can put aside the fears swirling all around you right now) this may be an amazing time to leave.
COVID not only is creating clarity for many people… but I also think it can give you cover. (Not that you NEED it, but if you want it.) Cover to…
- Take a leave so you can school your kids.
- Extend your maternity leave, as one member is doing.
- Say no because working 15-hour days from home is wreaking havoc on your mental health.
Michelle Obama may have had Barack, but if you want, you’ve got WILL.
A WILL member who literally could NOT bear to turn another document, is now on a leave of absence, getting paid, and knows in her bones that she’s not going back.
I believe you also have the courage to follow YOUR own path.
