Self-worth.
Two little words with a whole lot under the surface.
Our ability to stall or soar depends on our self-worth.
For some reason, we often think we, as women lawyers, don’t deserve to:
- feel happy in our bodies
- have a thrilling, romantic relationship
- do the creative, risk-taking work our heart yearns for
But you are worth more than you give yourself credit for.
Your hopes and dreams are worth more than whatever they pay for your six-minute increments.
Infinitely more.
This Marianne Williamson quote (yes, the same Marianne Williamson who is running for President) gets me every time…
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, ‘Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?’ Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world.”

You are worth it.
I recently spoke with a woman who is one of the youngest females to make partner at her firm. She called after breaking down at her seven-year-old daughter‘s birthday party in front of all of her family and her kids. The party was at her parent’s house. She’d been holed up working in her childhood bedroom and felt like a teenager again when her parents banged on the door and said, “It’s time to come downstairs and sing happy birthday to your daughter.” That’s when she lost it.
After that she realized something needed to change. She called me.
She is worth more than doing the bidding for the senior partners who toss her everything. She’s worth saying no to them. And YES to herself, her family, her daughter.
She, and ee all, have the opportunity to recognize the ways we give our power away. And to question…how does this connect to my feelings of self-worth?
It almost doesn’t matter why… that’s the work of sociologists and therapists. As a career coach for women lawyers, I’m more interested in “Now what?”
What I also know is you CAN have more… more fun, freedom and fulfillment in your career.
You no longer have to Google: “mental health support for women in big law” or “career counselor for big law attorneys”. You are here.
