Our inner critics usually run rampant.
Telling us all the things we can’t do, that we aren’t, or we will never…
I’ve been learning how to change that – reading, from mentors, experimenting on myself and sharing tools with WILL members.
One of the tools is saying, “I am…” and finishing the sentence with something powerful, affirming or expansive.
- I am competent and hardworking,
- I am patient with myself.
- I am responsible for my own joy.
The one about joy, was inspired by the month-long focus from the Lessons from a Quitter Facebook group. (See below for more about LFQ event).

To be honest, I often feel I don’t spend enough time with friends.
And, one of the top things bringing me joy this month has been time with people I love.
One of my very best friends lives in Seattle but is from the Jersey Shore. She comes back every July and I got down to see her for the first time this week.
It was a cloudy day. We ate breakfast at her brother’s restaurant by the beach, strolled the boardwalk in Asbury park, and hung out on her porch. #joyfuljuly

I recently saw this quote on social that stuck in my head:
“Be the girl who went for it.”
“Be the girl who left big law.”
I want you to take it a step further. Add in the “I am…”.
Try it like this…
- I am able to change.
- I am smart and hardworking.
- I am the girl who went for it.
- I am the girl who left big law.
Even if this doesn’t feel true at the instant, how does saying it make you feel?
Expansive?
A little scared?
Excited?
Saying it helps it become true.
We have to tell ourselves stories that paint the picture of who we are, and what we desire. If not, the inner critic has won.
If you want to expand your courage, kick your inner critic into the backseat, and develop new stories…you can.
I am here to help.
