If you were to be asked, “What do you love to do?” Before you answer, remember what feeds your soul and fuels your courage.

My friend Ken has done pretty well for himself professionally. He is now the VP of communications for the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

When he’s not tousling with Anna Wintour over the Costume Institute Gala (for real!), he’s more than happy to give tours to old college friends.

Recently, he and I organized a small reunion to meet for art and drinks.

Enjoying food, friends and The Met.

We caught the new exhibit, “Play it Loud” about the artistry of rock ‘n’ roll instruments.

From Ringo Starr‘s drum kit, to Kurt Cobain‘s smashed guitar and Lady Gaga’s piano, the whole exhibit pulsed.

My favorite was a video of Keith Richards, who waxes poetic about his favorite old, battered, electric guitar.

“It’s pretty beat up,” he says. “Just like me.

While watching his deeply creased face light up with joy, he spoke about…

…how a guitar is portable
….connecting with the musical history of traveling minstrels
spreading the electromagnetic pulse from his heart, to thousands of people.

I thought…

Keith Richards is still alive – because of love.

I often ask clients to what they love to do.

Sometimes they say, “I don’t know anymore.”

Then, a tentative whisper emerges…“Well, I do like to…” interests, fun, and ideas trickle out.

  • Read biographies.
  • Dance to Beyoncé
  • Watch Ancient Aliens

This may or may not lead to a job/career change.

But that’s not the point!

They begin to REMEMBER

…what feeds their soul

…fuels their courage, and

…expands their sense of themselves outside a job that drains their spirit.

They get back to, as one client recently said, “My true self.”

She’s been unhappy for eight years is now saying out loud, both what she does not want, and what she DOES.

She has AMAZING ideas, and a great url in her back pocket too!
