Five years ago, my father-in-law was taking my family to Mexico. We were thrilled and excited!
We were running late, and rushed out the door to Newark Airport.
My gut was telling me to check the tickets. It wasn’t till we reached the airport that we realized we should have gone to JFK.
My stomach plummeted into a giant dark pit.
As you can imagine, it wasn’t a happy call to my father-in-law.
I still make plenty of mistakes.
Recently I did not handle something well in my business.
I’m doing everything I can to clean it up.
To be honest, I’ve been beating myself up for this.
Then my wife shared something she learned from a mentor in medical school.
Forgive and remember.

What can this do to help you leave big law?
Have a more fulfilling career?
Go for something that makes you smile?
I speak with lawyers who are stuck in rabbit holes of worry and doubt.
Fear and concern over what other people will think guide their decisions.
I often hear:
- I dread going to work every day.
- I have headaches and anxiety.
- I’ve been here seven years longer than I ever wanted.
We usually know when something feels wrong, yet our heads get in the way.
Plus, when you are depleted and exhausted it is hard to summon the energy to change.
Forgiving and forgetting does not always serve us. Remembering leads to different action.
The goal is to have less days with a sinking stomach, and more days aligned with integrity, fulfillment.
To feel like ourselves again.
So, let me ask you…
- Who do you want to forgive?
- What do you want to remember?
For me, I am forgiving myself and doubling down on trusting my gut.
I owe this to me and to you.
