I recently came upon an old copy of Oprah Magazine with an interview of Diane von Furstenberg. At the very end of the article, I found something I want to share…
Oprah asked DVF what she was most proud of in her life. Her initial response was “My children,” as many women who are mothers say. But then, her deeper answer surprised me. I would have guessed the wrap dress or her business…
She said, “I am proudest of my relationship with myself.”
And went on at length how she enjoys her own company and makes herself laugh.
I believe this to be the most important relationship in our lives.
If we are able to develop a peaceful relationship with ourselves, one filled with acceptance and delight, if we are not tortured by our inner critics, then this is the most valuable relationship we can cultivate.
Trust me, I’m still working on this!
I have some vocal inner critics that I work to manage. Worst of all is when they leak out to my wife and kids, and then I feel horrible about myself.
In WILL Online, I go into depth about the inner critic. I share that it is a lifelong process of noticing, naming and managing our inner voices.
So, this February, a month dedicated to love, I am recommitting to my relationship with myself.
I invite you to try it too. Make a date with yourself and enjoy a piece of dark chocolate and a glass of wine. Write yourself a Valentines and specifically appreciate what it is you love about YOU.
I wish you a very happy Valentine’s month with the one(s) you love.
