Rituals and habits are subtle powerful things.
By rituals, I mean something you do thoughtfully and consistently that supports a certain intention.
Let me give you an example…
For a long time, I was not consistent in paying my bills. Sometimes I had late fees because I forgot to pay.
Let me correct that… I never forgot to pay, I just didn’t do it.
A few years ago, I created a ritual of paying my bills every other Sunday night. It’s on my calendar. I sit down with my wife and we have a glass of wine and pay the bills. It’s a chance for us to talk about money. Which isn’t always easy.
Now I have relief that my bills are paid.
For this new year, I want to share a ritual a friend gave me. It’s super simple.
I’m not talking about meditating for 30 minutes.
I’m talking about those first few moments just after you open your eyes.
BEFORE you start thinking about your day, try one or two of these…
1. Gratitude
Giving gratitude is an evidence-based way to feel better. When you wake up think about one thing you’re grateful for.
2. Smile
The activity of raising the corners of our mouths has a physiologic effect on our brains and bodies. Makes us feel better.
I’m doing it right now. 🙂
3. Set a clear, strong intention
Be specific. State one thing you want to accomplish this day.
Simple, right?
That’s an example of a ritual that might take you all of 30 to 60 seconds.
And you can do it while laying down!
